Last night the UK government announced that the country is now on lockdown due to the Corona virus pandemic. In lighter news, Disney Plus launched in the UK today and the WWE Network is offering an extensive free service due to global lockdowns, so here's my planned binge across Disney Plus, Netflix, WWE Network and good old fashioned home media!
10. Spaced (4oD)
Spaced is one of my all time favourite TV shows and usually requires an annual watch followed by Shaun of the Dead (which is on Netflix so will also be part of this entry). The series focuses on Tim and Daisy as they move into a flat together aaaannd that's pretty much the whole concept. As plain as that sounds, the series is anything but and is essential viewing for any fan of Simon Pegg.
9. WWE Ruthless Aggression (WWE Network)
Following the Attitude era and Vince McMahon purchasing WCW, everyone wondered what would come next. Two words: Ruthless Aggression. The first season highlights Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Evolution and the WWE'sf first brand split - essential viewing for any wrestling fan.
8. Gargoyles (Disney Plus)
Back in the 90s when kid's TV took a darker turn thanks to Batman: The Animated Series, Disney launched a fantastic series entitled "Gargoyles" focusing on a group of church Gargoyles that come to life to fight the forces of evil. There are the better part of 70 episodes on Disney Plus, so I'm looking forward to introducing my son to this gem!
7. Scrubs (DVD, Season 1-8)
One of the few series that I've had to own in case it ever got removed from streaming services (and it did! It was one of the reasons I first signed up to Netflix!), Scrubs is one of the greatest US sit-cims of all time and a must watch amidst the current pandemic. Yes, I know there was a ninth season but the series wraps up perfectly at the end of the fifth season.
6. Red Dwarf (Series 1-8, Blu Ray/DVD/Netflix)
I've only included the first 8 series on here due to the following ones not being available to stream (and me not owning them on physical media!). This show started back in 1986 (the year I was born) and became a staple of my childhood. The premises of the show is last human - Dave Lister - trying to get back to Earth with a crew consisting of a hologram of his crewmate - Arnold Rimmer, a lifeform evolved from his pet cat - The Cat - and a mechanoid they picked up following a distress call - Kryten.
5. Toast of London (Netflix, 4oD)
Matt Berry is awesome. That is all I really need to put to justify binging this. Toast of London features Matt Berry as Stephen Toast - a hard working actor living in London and all the craziness that that brings.
4. Peep Show (Netflix, 4oD)
Peep Show is one of the greatest modern British sitcoms from this side of the millenium. The series follows flat-mates Mark and Jeremy (played by David Mitchell and Robert Webb respectively) and their struggles through everyday life.
3. The Simpsons (Disney Plus)
One of the biggest bonuses of Disney Plus is that they've put every single episode of The Simpsons on their streaming service. I stopped watching around Season 11 so there's a good 19 seasons for me to binge through on here!
2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Netflix)
Season six is finally hitting Netflix at the end of March, which alone justifies this being on my list. I'll also be catching up on the first 5 seasons first hand because why not? Nine Nine!
1. X-Men: The Animated Series (Disney Plus)
One of the staples of my childhood, the X-Men animated series from the 1990s did a great job of adapting several classic storylines from the comics and also served to influence future comic storylines such as the Age of Apocalypse. Definitely worth a watch for any fans of the comics!
So that's my first list, I'll be following it up next week once I've watched these gems. Let me know what you're binging during the lockdown in the comments section!
