Netflix Anime Japan Sinks 2020 review

Nexflix’s new anime Japan Sinks 2020 is a smashing success, an incredible survive if you can story, that lets you know from the off-set that no character is safe.

Japan Sinks 2020 is based on the 1973 disaster novel, written by Japanese author Sakyo Komatsu, the book had spawned two previous live action film adaptions, but this is the first time the novel has been given an anime treatment. The series is obviously updated to match our modern times, and this highlighted by the Anime as the open scenes pan over the Tokyo Olympic Park, built for Tokyo 2020.

The series is much more than than just a disaster movie though, it also provides some great social commentary as the series touches on many topics that mirror modern day Japan. The main protagonist is a bit of a wet blanket, whilst she can be difficult to root for, the supporting characters are incredible and each are given a moment during the series to shine. The series is very story driven and moves along at a very good pace, it is difficult to stop watching, it does great job of engaging the viewer, keeping them hooked.

Both English dubbed and original Japanese voice actors do a great job of portraying their characters, so whether you prefer watching original or English dub it doesn’t matter as they both do an excellent job.

Quite honestly the way 2020 has gone this year, this feels right with the times, if you like disaster movies and survival stories, this would be a great anime for you.
