So we are officially two days removed from the September 4th launch date of Marvel's Avengers on the PS4 and Xbox One. As a massive Marvel and videogame fan, I couldn't resist picking this up on launch day for the PS4 and figured now would be as good a time as any to offer my first thoughts on the game.
*Caution, Spoilers Ahead*
So, the first thing that irked me with the game was that it needed a 10GB update before you could play and even with the PS4's "Start Game Without Updating" feature, the campaign was sadly locked until the updated downloaded. 10GB later and I was ready to play!
There's been a lot of people complaining about the visual style and look of the team but once you start playing you quickly fall in love with it's style - much like the PS4 Spider-Man title.
The game puts you straight in the shoes of a pre-Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan as she attends a convention and fan fiction competition aboard the Chimera - the Avengers own helicarrier. Then disaster strikes and you get a chance to play as the whole Avengers roster - Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Black Widow before an explosion takes down the Chimera, kills Captain America and spreads Terrigen mists throughout the city - leading to the creation of the InHumans.
The game then jumps ahead by 5 years and we find out Kamala is an InHuman, the Avengers have disbanded and A.I.M. have taken control of the USA...
The following narrative puts you as Kamala as you uncover the truth behind the opening explosion and attempt to put the team back together.
The game feels like 6 different games combined, with a separate engine for each character and thankfully doesn't feel bloated. I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing where the story goes and also delving into the multiplayer once the campaign is over.
For this first impression I'd give it a solid 9 out of 10.
