LEGO Marvel's Avengers (Xbox One, PS4) Review

A few weeks ago I gave into temptation and picked up the latest offering from the Lego video game series.. Marvel's Avengers.

The game starts off with a re-enactment of the opening scene from Age of Ultron and highlight's all of the gameplay and combat upgrades the characters have received since Lego Marvel Superheroes. After going through the opening level, the game shifts back to the story from the first Avengers movie and goes on to feature several of the usual Lego gameplay techniques. The biggest problem this game suffers from is the same problem EVERY Lego game this side of Lego Batman suffers from: over familiarity. It is, unfortunately, the same game as every other Lego game since the first Lego Batman, met with the same tried and tested building issues - silver bricks that can only be destroyed by explosions, gold bricks that can only be destroyed by lasers and glass bricks that can only be destroyed by sonar/sonic powers.

On the plus side, as it'd been so long since the last time I played any Lego game, so this installment still felt relatively fresh and (as with any Lego game) there's more than enough bonus levels and characters to unlock to keep me busy for a good couple of weeks.

One thing I'd also like to address: The Unlockables. This game features hundreds of Marvel characters, both popular and obscure but only the ones that Marvel has the studio rights to. So there's no X-Men, no Spider-Man and no Fantastic Four. Now I know that the game is called "Lego Avengers" but Wolverine and Spidey became Avengers way back in 2004 so surely they could have made an exception in their case? I don't get the thought process of leaving out Wolverine and Spider-Man in favour of less-cared-about characters like Detroit Steel and Gorilla Girl. And yes, I am aware that ALL of the FF have been Avengers at some point or other too.

Despite the lack of Spidey, Logan and the FF, the game doesn't actually feel like it's missing something. Much like most of Marvel's recent publications. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed this game (despite it still playing like the first Lego Batman) and would recommend it to anyone who is slightly interested in this sort of game.

Overall Rating: I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10.
