Jim Cornette presents; Behind The Curtain the Review

Two of my biggest loves are comics and wrestling, so when my beautiful fiancée bought me Jim Cornette Behind the Curtain Real Pro Wrestling Stories comic book, for my birthday I was a happy man.

Jim Cornette is one of most controversial figures in wrestling mainly for his outbursts with regards to the state of modern wrestling, but the one thing you cannot deny him, is his love the industry. It goes beyond the 30 years plus he has dedicated his life working directly in the industry for a number of promotions, from the NWA, WCW, TNA and ROH in a variety of positions, such as a photographer, ring announcer, manager, commentator and a producer/promoter. He also spent most of his life researching the History of the business he loves. One of the other things you cannot deny him is the fact that he is an amazing story teller. Whether it was his promos during his time in the wrestling industry or on either of his podcasts the Jim Cornette Experience or the Drive Thru. I will not deny it I do listen both of his podcasts each and every week, so was very excited to finally read the comic he had been promoting.

The stories are by Jim Cornette, written by Brandon Easton with Art by Denis Merdi I really enjoyed reading this from the first page to last, honestly from the moment I started I did not put it down till I actually finished and was sad once I had. The book starts with an intro written by the man himself, outlining his history and his love for the industry. I thought this was a great intro for the book, as most new wrestling fans just know him as the guy who criticises modern wrestling.

Throughout the book after every issue/chapter there are newspaper articles and photos of the stories told within, including some photos taken by the man himself after entering the industry as a photographer. However, the artwork was not particularly to my taste, but art is subjective and I have never let that stop me enjoying a good story, the book is excellently written I could almost hear Cornette in my head as read through the stories. The stories told in the book are great, I did recognise a few, either from wrestling documentary shows such as Dark Side of the ring or from either of Jim’s podcasts, but to be honest there were more stories I had not heard before. Overall I enjoyed reading this. If you love wrestling, whether the modern or the classic and if you also love comics, as I do, this is a must read. If you’re not buying this comic because you’re not a fan of Jim Cornette for what he has to say, then you’re missing out on great book full of the history of wrestling, that every fan should know.

4 and half stars.

I really hope that this is not last comic book he decides to be part of, as I know there are many great stories that could still be told in this medium and I would love to read more. I am not one one for reading massive biography or historical books, so for people like me who love a good comic with great stories and awesome artwork this is the perfect medium.

The Comic is available at all good book retailers, amazon or you can get a signed copy from JimCornette.com
