This weekend saw the release of an Xbox One exclusive demo for the upcoming Capcom videogame, Devil May Cry. As someone's who's played (and finished) all 5 previous games (because the fifth one wasn't called "5" so now number 6 gets that number...) I was very glad to hear that Capcom were releasing a follow-up to the last-gen title Devil May Cry 4, which is what fans wanted INSTEAD of dmc: devil may cry back when that project was first announced.
I made a point of ignoring the release trailers and only read brief snippits regarding this release due to being a fan of the franchise and wanting to go into my gaming experience fresh when the game released but then the demo dropped and I HAD to try it.
And boy am I glad I did - that's just saved me from shelling out £50 on release date because, sadly, I won't be picking this game up on release. I'll probably give it a shot when the price drops but the demo didn't grip me in a way that made me want to get the game. It's not all bad so let's look at some of the positives and some of the negatives.
Positives:
- Visually, it's very impressive
- There's a lot going on and the scale of the boss fights seem very "epic"
- The combat system is very easy to get to grips with
- Nero's back (but we'll touch upon that in the negatives)
Negatives:
- Nero's got the dmc appearance for some reason (he'd appeared in DMC 4 as a younger looking version of Dante which was explained in the story in a way that actually made sense)
- The enemies seem too samey but not in a good way - they seem more like the rebooted dmc-style enemies and not like the classic DMC enemies.
- There seems to be way too much reliance on the dmc version of the series' lore and not a continuation of the classic, numbered style
- It feels more like 2 & 3 than 1 or 4 - In my opinion the first Devil May Cry was the best in the series. The gameplay, enemies, story and replayability (BOOM! Made up a word) were all top-notch and 4 (The first release on the 360 and PS3) also tried to emulate that feeling whereas 2 & 3 were more focused on filling the screen with enemies (which, while cool, got too repeatative)
Overall Rating: 2/5 - As mentioned earlier, I won't be picking this up on release but am willing to give it a shot when the price drops.
I know what you mean. I was disappointed that we had to play as emo-Nero instead of Dante. This will be the third game in a row where you can't play as classic Dante from the get go. Thumbs down from me.
