A few years ago, I happened across a Facebook page for a project from my fellow Burtonion, Lee Cope, for a new comic called "The Back of Beyond". Over the following few months I kept an eye out for updates and reached out to Lee to see if I'd be able to read and review a proof copy of the first issue when ready. I'm happy to say it now is and Lee wonderfully sent over a digital copy of the first issue for me to check out and offer my thoughts. The book has now been renamed to "Beyond the End of my Street" and a Kickstarter listing has been raised to aid with a physical release of the first issue (details of which can be found at the bottom of the review).
The first thing that caught my eye on this was the artwork and use of a black and white tone throughout. The art style is unique and helps draw you in to the story and within a page or two you forget that the story is in black and white.
The story itself is great and you really feel for the plight of Amos throughout the first half of the book. Aside from that character name drop, I'm going to avoid giving anything away from the plot as I really would like to encourage everyone to read and support Lee's title. One thing I will say is that the story itself works as a standalone issue (something that is missing in most modern comics) and left me intrigued as to where the book will go next.
I also enjoyed the setting of this - the location of this tale is based on an area that myself and some of my closest friends would explore regularly during our early teens so it was nice to feel a connection to the setting.
I would give this issue a solid 5 out of 5 and am genuinely looking forward to the release of the second issue. You can support Lee Cope via Kickstarter over at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bteoms/beyond-the-end-of-my-street?ref=android_project_share
