The Six-Step Process is a regular interview that we ran on both the Team Venom website and Team Venom Magazine and will run on this website on a regular basis. Basically we ask the same 6 questions in a kind of “quick-fire” interview with a random top independent talent. This week’s 6-Step is with one of the US's top indie stars, Josh Powers.
1. What got you into wrestling?
My best friend in middle and high school invited me over to his house to watch Smackdown! in 9th grade and said I would like it. The first match I saw was Undertaker vs. Big Daddy V and I was totally into it. Then, a few weeks later on an FCA retreat, I wandered into an FYE store at the Myrtle Beach Mall where they were playing a WrestleMania 24 DVD and I watched HBK retire Ric Flair. When I saw that I basically decided that this was what I wanted to do with my life, and here we are.
2. What’s been your favourite experience so far?
I've gotten to share the ring with some absolute legends like Terry Funk, Rickey Morton, Steve Corino, Tom Prichard, and countless others. My favorite memory, though, is wrestling against Matt Hardy 20 minutes from my house in front of all my friends and family with close to 500 people in the crowd. It was one of the greatest experiences of my entire life, and if I quit tomorrow I could live with knowing that I had an incredible match with one of my favorite wrestlers ever.
3. Where has been your favourite place to work so far?
Any time I get to work near my hometown of Spartanburg, SC, it is incredibly special. I got to work for Big Time Wrestling in the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium in front of a sellout crowd of at least 2,000 people. I would love to be able to do that again. It's fun to be asked for autographs at Zaxby's and be able to pretend that you're more famous than you are in front of girls.
4. What would be your dream scenario?
I used to be dead set on working for WWE, but there are so many opportunities in wrestling now to make your own way that I don't necessarily have a "dream scenario." I want to continue enjoying doing what I currently do, and I would consider it a huge honor and privilege to have a larger stage to perform on. I've already made it farther than my high school guidance counselor thought that I would, so anything beyond where I am now would be icing on the cake. I just want to enjoy the ride and be the best that I can be where I am.
5. Who have been your favourite people to work with?
My favorite match has most certainly been with Matt Hardy, far and away. It's hard to pick enough guys to fit in this article, because I could list people that I enjoy working with for hours. Any list would be doing someone a disservice because there are so many talented guys that I feel honored to have shared the ring with. I will say that I absolutely love beating the crap out of Jett Black and TK Stark. Zane Riley will basically let me get away with anything, so working with him is tons of fun. Anthony Janazzo is my wrestling dad, so I love beating him up. My psychology major friends at school would probably have a field day with that... I could list so many more guys that I've had killer matches with that drive me to be at my best, like Rob Killjoy, Tracer X, Yuta, my trainer Erik Anton, and so many other guys that will be insulted that they aren't on the list here but are in the list in my head. I love all of you except for Mason Myles. Also, I had a series of matches with Steve Corino and CW Anderson that taught me more in 4 or 5 matches than I could learn in years otherwise. I've been privileged to share the ring with so many talented guys over the last 5 years.
6. What does the future hold for you?
Who can say what the future holds? I'm starting to expand my horizons into Florida, which is an incredible experience. I would love to continue to go to new places and wrestle new people, and I want to continue to grow as much as I can. If I've won you over in this interview with my indelible charm, contact your local promoter and tell him to contact me! I would love for more people to see me lariat people out of their shoes. Also, hopefully the future holds you following me on Twitter and Instagram because I am a cool and funny dude that you should follow, @thejoshpowers. I just want to continue living the dream and (hopefully) inspiring people to follow their dreams no matter how ridiculous they seem. Also, it is fun to yell at children so I will continue to do that.
