MLW #96 Recap and Review

This week’s Main Event is Brian Pillman Jr challenging for the Heavyweight Championship against current Champion Jacob Fatu. Its not just about the championship for Pillman, he is still looking for revenge for what Contra did to Teddy Hart. The show kicks off with a video recap package highlighting the recent events, between Contra and the members of the Hart Foundation. This is followed by listing of the other matches on this episode card, including Richard Holliday Vs Savio Vega as well as the first match of the night, Dominic Garini Vs Zenshi.

The Episode Kicks of properly with Tom Lawler, after first running down the Von Erichs and getting the white hot Texas crowd foaming at the mouths. After this, he starts running down Lucha wrestlers, before turning to the ring announcer for his fellow ‘Team Filthy’ member Dominic Garrini entrance, as he heads to ring Tom Lawler lists off all his championships in the world of grappling and Jiu Jitsu.

Zenshi Vs Dominic Garrini

Zenshi heads to ring, as a south American Lucha champion from Chile, he’s not short on accomplishments either, Zenshi had asked MLW officials for this match following the comments made by Garrini in regards to Lucha competitors. Zenshi is out to show Garrini that Lucha is more than just flips, Garrini is looking to prove his Martial Arts background is superior. It’s MLW fusion at its finest, two completely different styles of fighting going one on one to see which is best. The fight goes as you’d expect Garrini wants to get his hand on Zenshi to ground him, Zenshi uses his amazing agility to avoid Garrinis grasp.

Every time Garrini manages to get his hands on Zenshi, he works over his arm. Zenshi moves around the ring with such agility and grace, he’s like water, managing to hit some extremely innovative offence and even defence. Garrini manages to ground Zenshi long enough to stomp on his arm the referee intervenes, a physio is called out and this looks like a legit injury, but the bell had not sounded so Garrini continues his assault, eventually hitting a German suplex into an armbar causing the Ref to put an end to the match. A move he calls the Mighty Mouse, after UFC Demitrius Johnson who used a similar move to end a UFC Fight. Despite the loss, Zenshi is a sight to behold. Garrini is still learning how to translate his legit fighting skills to a wrestling ring. Working with Tom Lawler is excellent Idea considering his background and how he has managed to bring his MMA style to the world of wrestling.

In Ring Interview

After Match Alicia Atout heads down to the ring area to conduct an in ring interview she comments on if Garrini took to things to far, Lawler takes control and after referring to Alicia as Joe Rogan, which got a laugh out of me. Team Filthy turns in Cobra Cai stating that will be “No Mercy”.

Back Stage incident

We get word of back stage incident, as Brian Pillman Jr is entering the building he is attacked by two masked men, members of Contra Sentai Death Squad. However they were not expecting Pillman to be accompanied by Davey Boy Smith Jr and the two Manage to fight the mask men off.

Video Package’s

A look at Last weeks Contra back stage Interview talking about the Sentai Death squad and the Death of the Hart Foundation.

Finished with a look back at last weeks main event between MJF and Marshal Von Erich

Back Stage Interview

Alicia Atout is back stage with three members of the Dynasty, Alexander Hammerstone, MJF and newest member Gino Medina, MJF is all hyper as he drank Richard Holliday’s Coffee and he has never had caffeine. After MJF goes on crazy tangent due to the coffee, they discuss how Holliday’s Lawyer/Father has got them a producers position for the next week, which will be an all Dynasty show, they announce three matches; Gino Medina Vs Septimo Dragon, Hammerstone Vs Lucha Legend Aerostar and the main event Richard Holliday and MJF Vs The Von Erichs in a rematch for the tag team championships. I love the Dynasty and this segment was genius. MJF was comical, his chemistry with Hammerstone is perfect, and even Hammerstone, has come so far with regards to his Promos he is becoming the full package. Medina will grow in his role with team and thechemistry with the others should improve, he does have natural charisma. I cannot wait till next weeks show.

Savio Vega Vs Richard Holliday

As Holliday makes his way to arena MJF runs down to ringside to join the commentary team, out comes Savio, as he makes his way to the ring MJF comments on how Savio reminds him of Kwang back in the WWF, I found this particularly funny. Holliday is like amodern Million Dollar Man his mannerisms the way he moves around the ring, although still green in some areas his potential for stardom is evident for all to see. Savio is a legend however if you’re a legend you’re not young and you can see he cannot work like he used to and has developed a more brawling style. Still being in the ring with likes Savio and his experience is great for young guys like Holliday. Its back and forth action, its a slow pace, eventually Holliday gets the upper hand with twisting Suplex neckbreaker very similar to Dustin Rhodes finisher (hmmm I wonder). Throughout the match MJF was absolute gold on commentary after the match Holliday steals Savio’s Carribean championship belt, looking at the camera he says hell get Father/Lawyer to make that match which was non title into an official championship match.

3 and Half Star (Without the MJF Commentary it would’ve only been a 3 Star match at most)

Back Stage Segment

Davey Boy Smith is getting Pillman ready for his match tonight and, tells him that he has his back, outcome the Von Erichs that also let pillman know that they have his back and offer up some advice. Pillman having been humbled by Low Ki a while back after not heeding advice from him, has seemingly learned his lesson as he asks for this advice and goes off to talk with the Von Erichs.

Cameras manage to catch up with Zenshi to find out how he was doing and how he was feeling following his match with Garrini of Team Filthy, he answers simply that he is looking for revenge.

Main Event of the Show

MLW Heavyweight Champion Jacob Fatu Vs Brian Pillman Jr

A nice package highlighting previous Champions brings us to championship match, they build to it as if was the UFC with the tale of tape highlighting their stats, such as hight, weight and style, commentators note on the 60lb weight difference. We get classic big guy Vs little guy story as old as time in wrestling, the match starts with Fatu throwing the smaller Pillman around the ring corner to corner. Brian manges to use his speed advantage to get Fatu to make a mistake, but its not long before Fatu puts Pillman back to mat with a single shot, Fatu shows his power when he cathes Pillman out of mid air following a cross body attempt. Pillman shows his harts and continues to fight back, and starts string offence together, we then get back stage footage the Contra Sentai death squad attacking Davey Boy, the Von Erichs make the save, then Injustice get involved hitting Pillman with Myron loaded chest protector, Fatu hits a hand stand spring board Moonsault and goes for pin, Pillman kicks out, but then Fatu hit top rope spring board Moonsault not just once but twice and picks up the win.

Final Thoughts

I felt that there were to many video packages this week, the matches were short, I was really looking forward to Pillman Vs Fatu and felt they were not given enough time and there was to much interference. The Dynasty were excellent with decent match from Holliday, MJF on commentary as well as their back stage Interview I am really looking forward to their produced show next week. I can see Zenshi joining forces with other Luchadores to help in his fight against team filthy, I would like to see a new member of team filthy maybe maybe Douglas James would be good fit. MLW continue to look all over the world for partnerships with great companies such as AAA and Dragongate. It looks as though Pillman will be working a programme with Injustice going forward, whilst Davey Boy will continue to take on Contra.

3 Stars Overall
