MLW #100 Review and Recap

This week’s episode comes from the historic 2300 arena in Philadelphia and it’s a great line up for the 100th episode. Erick Stevens vs Davey Boy Smith jr, Jimmy Havok Vs Pillman Jr and of course the main event is for the world heavyweight title as Champion Jacob Fatu of Contra will take on Cima of the OWE’s and AEW’s Strong Hearts faction. Rich Bochinni and AJ Kirsch are on commentary.

Video Promo

A promo video from Contra’s Jacob Fatu on his main event match tonight against Cima, is not about wins and losses its all about pain, as he aims to end Cima for good.

Singles Match

Erick Stevens Vs Davey Boy Smith Jr

Tom Lawler has joined the commentary team to support his team filthy team mate Erick Stevens. As the match gets underway, Davey Boy shows of his power as well as his technical prowess. Stevens begins to get back into match using a dragon whip and working over Davey boys leg, he attempts several roll ups to get the pin but Davey boy is able kick out of each attempt. Eventually Davey Boy uses his technical power to get back on top, after a running power slam and a diving headbutt from the top rope, he is able to get the pin.

This was a decent match. Davey Boy looked great, his technical ability for his size is incredible, I would say he's even more of a polished competitor than his father was, and that says a lot, his father was also a great performer. Stevens still looked good despite the defeat he was tenacious and vicious in his attacks to Davey Boys Leg.

Outside the Arena

Due to continuous attacks on Brian Pillman Jr, Injustice have been barred from the Arena, a camera catches them outside trying to get in to the building, but a security guard informs the Injustice members they were not on the list. This of course irritates the members of Injustice.

Video Promo

Jimmy Havoc delivers a promo about his addiction problem, but he's not addicted to drink or drugs... he is addicted pain, he loves pain but the one thing he enjoys more than his own pain, is causing other people pain. He then addresses his up coming opponent, Brian Pilman Jr, he lets him know its not personal but he has to feed his addiction so he has to cause him pain.

Video Promo

LA Park delivers a promo, following last weeks return, in which LA park and his son defeated Contra Units Simon Gotch and Josef Samael. LA Park lets the MLW audience know that he is now a free agent and no one is pulling his strings, this is likely a reference to Salina De La Renta and Promociones Dorado.

Middleweight Singles Match

Jimmy Havoc Vs Brian Pillman Jr

Priscilla Kelly has accompanied Jimmy Havoc to ring. The pair lock up to begin with and they actually have wrestling match to everyone's surprise. Pillman begins to take control of the match and it looks like he is about to beat Havoc, but Priscilla places Havoc’s leg on the rope causing a rope break. This is not last time she interferes, she continues to interfere throughout the rest of the match, this ends up back firing as she hits Havoc with a cross body, and a splash. Once Pillman gets rid of Kelly using a low bridge, he hits Havoc with a spring board clothes line to pick up the win. Pillman is then interviewed by Alicia Atout, where he delivers a promo, stating his intentions to go after the middleweight title.

This match was much better than I expected, it’s easy to forget that Jimmy Havoc was trained at the same school that gave the world Zack Sabre Jr, as he spends so much time competing in garbage wrestling matches. Pillman is getting better and better, and crowd are 100% behind him, his promo afterwards was delivered with passion.

Main Event

Heavyweight title

Champion Jacob Fatu Vs Cima

Jacob Fatu is accompanied by Joesf Samael. They run the tale of the tape and it shows that Fatu has over 100lbs advantage on Cima. Cima uses his speed and experience and is able to gain the early advantage, managing to infuriate the giant Samoan causing him to make a mistake. This advantage does not last long, Jacob Fatu is so strong and so viscous he begins to dominate Cima, Samael gets a cheap shot in as Fatu distracts the referee. Cima is able to a mount a comeback following a missed Vader bomb from Fatu, but it is all for nothing Fatu is to big and too strong, after a pop up Samoan drop, Fatu hits two moonsaults on Cima for the win. After the match members of Contra Units Senpai death squad head to ring, they bring with them a stretcher and body bag. Fatu places Cima into the body bag and death squad take him back stage, it seems Contra were dead set on sending a message to any future challenges.

I thought this match was going to be better than what it was, Fatu was fantastic as always, his size with his athleticism is just amazing, Cima did not come off as a credible challenge for Fatu. Overall this was a good match but I just expected more from both competitors, although this certainly put Fatu over strong.

Final Thoughts

This was good episode of MLW it was better than last week’s episode, which started well but fell flat, this week’s episode got off to a good start and kept it up for rest of night. The main event was a little less spectacular than I was hoping for, but it did not bring the show down. With use of video packages and promos MLW do great job ensuring you do not forget any feuds that may not be featured on the show. Next week show looks set to be good, with the Main Event of Laredo Kid vs Myron Reed for the middleweight title, as well as Gino Medina Vs Mance Warner and Low Ki Vs King Mo. MLW is free to watch on YouTube every Saturday night.

3 and half stars overall.
