Last Friday I visited Hucknall for House Of Pain Wrestling. This venue has always had a wild crowd and with some great matches on the card including a grudge match and a blue light street fight, it was set to be a great show. So lets get into what happened!
Match #1
Big Freakin Dan VS Johnny Sterling (Grudge match)
With the recent history of these two men, this match was always going to be full of heat. Since BFD turned his back on Sterling, attacking him after a tag team match it has been nothing but a war. This match was no different. Sterling had barely entered the ring before being jumped on by BFD. However Johnny quickly turned the tables and took control. BFD rolled out of the ring in anger at being bested. It didn't take Sterling long to follow and the chase was on. BFD rolled back into the ring closely followed by Sterling, BFD seemed to have planned ahead and cut Sterling off as he jumped into the ring. This still wasn't enough to keep Sterling from fighting. In temper BFD claimed he had enough and made his way out of the ring to backstage. Sterling wanting to settle the grudge, followed and dragged BFD back to the ring. From here BFD took the advantage running Sterling into a ring post. Sterling being injured BFD pushed him into the ring and continued the beat down, even suplexing him into the ring corner. Sterling gaining some energy from somewhere and attempted to fight back but was cut short by a clothesline from BFD. Still determined to not be beaten Sterling hit a high flying rana . Not quite enough BFD attempted a submission on Sterling, however this was reversed into a pin where Sterling took the three count for the win! Grudge settled? Time will tell. Go Johnny Go Go!!
After the match I caught up with Johnny to see how he thought his match went. Here is what he had to say.
"I really loved it, as bfd and myself have been feuding for quite some time now. I feel we have good chemistry. When he turned on me it happened in Hucknall, and that's where the crowd are with me most I feel. You know that you have the crowd when you get chucked out of the ring and the heel is taunting you and the all the kids come rushing up to you and help. That's when you know you have the crowd in the palm of your hand. It helps that we have been wrestling with each other now for months now, and things seem to go more smoothly. There's so much emotion and drama in wrestling and that is what makes me love it even more."
Match #2
Kanji VS Jessica Logan
This match started with a "you're not massive" chant, which as any House Of Pain fan knows and probably why they do it, really annoys 'Miss massive' Jessica Logan. So this made her angry from the get go, much to the amusement of 'The Asian Sensation' Kanji. Kanji then suggested a test of strength, which for her seemed too easy as she managed to push Logan back into a bridge. Not one to give up so easily Logan pushed back. Not quite managing to push Kanji as far as she hoped Logan swept the legs from under Kanji in an attempt to take control. This also never went to plan as she tried for a couple of quick pins, Kanji was even quick to kick out. Frustrated Logan ran to the outside of the ring. After having a bit of a tantrum she made her way back to the ring where Kanji was waiting to try test of strength take 2. Kanji taking control yet again, out moved anything Logan had to throw her way. In yet another tantrum because the girl is such a diva, Logan asked for some space. Kanji only being too obliging backed all the way to the ropes. Unfortunately Logan had her trusty other half Davey Thompson at ring side, who took the opportunity to trip Kanji up and drag her out of the ring. Davey attempting to slow Kanji down went to strike her, she was just too fast and dodged out of the way. Distracted by Thompson, Kanji wasn't aware of the flying Logan heading straight for her as Logan had jumped through the ropes to take Kanji out. From here Logan took advantage of the out numbered Kanji. This wasn't enough to keep Kanji down, who with some well timed kicks, a drop kick and even a 619 in he corner was able to pin Logan for a two count. Knowing what she had to do Kanji set Logan up for a second corner 619, however Thompson just could not help but interfere pushed Logan out the way. Kanji having enough of the meddling gave a rana to Thompson on the outside of the ring. Thompson not amused he was made a fool of, distracted the ref which allowed Visage to enter the ring and attack Kanji. Giving her a knee to the face in the corner and throwing her into the centre of the ring, Visage then dragged Logan to cover Kanji for the pin and made a quick exit before the ref saw what had gone on. The ref made the three count and Logan won. As if Visage turning on Kanji and costing her the women's Championship wasn't bad enough, I can't help but think these actions from Visage will only set Kanji's fire to burn even more fierce.
Match #3
Tommy Taylor, Joseph Starr & Max Kymera VS Saj Malik (Full Throttle Champ), Big Mike Wylde & Ash Cady
The match started with 'The Fallen' Joseph Starr and Full Throttle Champion 'The sensational' Saj Malik. Starr took early control in this match, Which was short lived, as Malik soon took over with his high flying moves. As the crowd started a "chops" chant, Malik was quick to tag in the chop king himself, Big Mike Wylde. As BMW was threatening to chop Starr, he ran to the out side of the ring to have a bit of a paddy about not wanting to be chopped. No one can blame him to be fair, BMW chops are enough to make any one cringe from the sound alone. Starr not wanting to be counted out jumped in, and straight back out again demanding BMW tag in 'Retro' Ash Cady. BMW did so and as Cady entered the ring Starr jumped in and tagged Max Kymera straight away. Unfortunately for Kymera, Cady is super speedy on his feet and for a while took control until he missed a corner splash and from then Kymera took the lead. From there a series of tags between Kymera, Starr and Tommy Taylor happened, each time Cady getting beat down more and more and being kept away from his corner. Not wanting Cady to get to his team mates Taylor knocked Malik of the side of the ring, he also tried to knock BMW off the edge too with no luck. Kymera then wanting to help also ran round to pull BMW off the edge of the ring and this also failed. Cady was eventually able to tag in Malik who took total control and took everyone out. Unfortunately he was cut off and as it looked like Kymera was taking the advantage, the Full Throttle Champion Malik showed exactly why he is the Champ, hit a DDT on Kymera and took the pin for a 3 count. Well done team good guys.
Match #4
Martial Law (Tag Team Champs) VS Nyle Hind & Visage
Before this match started Visage stated that he didn't need to be there, as what he was there for had already been done. And that was just to attack his former best friend Kanji during her match. Also being an "A+ player in a C- environment," these were his words not mine, he felt the fans didn't deserve to see the 'Queen of Queens' in action and was set to leave. With some words from Bam Bam Barton he decided to hang around.
The match started with Barton taking the first hold on 'Mr Number One' Nyle Hind, and no matter what he tried to do, he just couldn't shake off the experienced Barton. As soon as Hind did get out of the grip of Barton he ran out of the ring. Only for him to be chased down by Marcus Hood and thrown back in. From here Hind tried to take down Barton again with little to no success. Barton then making a tag to Hood, Hind was at the mercy of Martial Law as Visage wanted nothing to do with the match and refused the tag and told Hind that he was on his own. Visage basically stood at ringside looking pretty. With Barton tagged in he ran at Hind who dodged, and as Barton was about to run off the ropes, Visage finally helped his partner by pulling the ropes down causing Barton to go over and fall to out the ring. As Barton got to his feet, Visage gave a kick that was so hard the noise echoed round the room, and then he threw Barton back in. Hind took advantage of a winded Barton and continued the assault in the ring, Finally making a tag to Visage who didn't hold back from Barton, even at one point raking his eyes. Visage then tagged in Hind back in and Barton looked beat. Until Hind tried for a suplex, which was then reversed by Barton who was then able to make the tag to a waiting Hood. Hind ran to Visage to make a tag, however Visage jumped off the side of the ring and claiming he wanted no part of that. Hind then took a beating from Hood and the crowd were loving it. Visage getting angry that Hind was failing tagged in, however he was then beat around the ring by a fired up Hood. Hind attempted a rescue and that never went to plan, as he was tripped up onto Visage and ended up headbutting him in a place no man needs to be headbutted. Both men down Martial Law took the opportunity for a double 'sausage roll' move. Hood then went for his famous Jelly Belly splash, only for Visage to move who then took control of Hood. Visage had set Hood up in the corner for his devastating knee to the face. However Visage took to long playing to the crowd and in that time Kanji had ran to the ring to get some revenge on Visage. The two couldn't hold back and their fight spiralled out the ring and into the back, leaving Hind to martial law who dished out a judge Rinder, which is personally my favourite move to witness, and not just because it makes me laugh to hear them yell "Judge Rinder" and they took the pin for the 3 count.
Match #5
Michael Rothrock (Middle Weight Champ) VS Bijorn (Blue Light Street Fight)
This match started with Bijorn trying to intimidate 'The Interceptor' Michael Rothrock by shoving him across the ring. Bijorn then ran at Rothrock who managed to reverse it and sent Bijorn flying. In anger he rolled out the ring and had a bit of a tantrum. Alot of tantrums went on in this show! As he rolled back in he used the ref to distract Rothrock and attacked him from behind. However Rothrock gained advantage and gave a thin blue line from the top rope. The fight then escalated to the outside of the ring where it became utter chaos. All manner of weapons were used including a picture. Bijorn set Rothrock up against the ring post for a chop, Rothrock then ducked and Bijorn smashed his hand into the post. Rothrock then took the opportunity to drag the injured Bijorn around the crowd and encouraged the fans to give him a high five. The fight then spiralled out of the building however you could hear the bangs and crashes from out side. The pair finally returned with Rothrock dragging Bijorn to the ring with a toilet brush in his hand. Bijorn reversed the attack from the Rothrock and the toilet brush. Bijorn then made his way to back stage and when he returned back to the ring, bringing with him a metal rubbish can . After an exchange of shots Bijorn was taking control and set Rothrock up in a chair on the outside of the ring, where he ran and kicked him off. So much went off in the match it was hard to keep up. As Rothrock gained advantage on Bijorn, Timber Wolf came to the ring with a Kendo stick and attacked Rothrock, however Rothrock being too smart reversed it, as he got the kendo stick off Timber Wolf he then chased him out the ring and out the back beating him with the stick along the way. As he returned to the ring he took his belt off and tried to use it on Bijorn. Bijorn reversed this and used the belt on Rothrock and the sound of the belt hitting him made me die inside. With Rothrock down, Bijorn fetched what looked like trellis from the back and set it up in the corner. He launched Rothrock at it who stopped himself and Bijorn was then thrown into the trellis sending wood flying everywhere. Bijorn managed to gain control and hung Rothrock upside down in the corner and chocked him with the belt, not happy with just that he also drop kicked him for good measure. Rothrock got to his feet and retrieved his riot helmet from under the ring. Bijorn attempted a DDT on Rothrock, who thanks to the protection of his trusty riot helmet popped straight back up as nothing happened. Then using his riot helmet as a weapon he launched it at Bijorn. He then got some clamps from under the ring and attached them to the nipples of Bijorn. Genuinely never thought that would be something I would ever have to write. This fight was insane and so brutal. Rothrock introduced a boxing glove into the match, as clearly the weapons already littered about the building wasn't quite enough. The fight spiralled into the crowd once again, even ending up at the bar. Rothrock then introduced a riot shield, however Bijorn managed to get the shield and used it against Rothrock.
Trying to help his team mate, Davey Thompson made his way to the ring with a chair in hand. He attempted to hit Rothrock who dodged the shot which left Davey to hit the ropes and as it bounced, took out the man he came to help Bijorn. Unhappy that his efforts were wasted Thompson then dragged a table to ring side. He tried to pull Rothrock off the side of the ring into the table but was not very successful. Bijorn offering some help went to kick Rothrock off but missed and hit his own team mate Thompson and sent him through the table. Rothrock then found some pliers and used them on Bijorn in a place that's enough to leave any mans eyes watering. It then became a battle of pins until Bijorn had enough and took the ref out. Bijorn then uncovered the ring revealing the wooden boards underneath, then picking up Rothrock was going to pile drive him onto the exposed boards. Rothrock managed to reverse this and in a battle managed to DDT Bijorn from the ropes onto the wooden boards and took the pin for the three count. Phew!
A few days After the Blue Light Street Fight I caught up with 'The interceptor' Michael Rothrock to see how he thought his match went. Here is what he had to say.
"It was the toughest match I’ve ever had but the support from the House of Pain Wrestling fans in Hucknall is what got me through it. As much as I dislike Bjorn, I respect him for accepting my challenge. We both stepped in the ring and settled the score by putting our bodies through so much punishment because the Middleweight Championship is that important to us both. I don’t know how he felt the next day but I’ll admit that I woke up feeling as though I’d been in car crash but it was all worth it. I’m so happy I retained my championship and did it at a venue I love and in front of a group of fans who are very special to me. Now I’m going to take my title and continue to defend it against any worthy contenders within the middleweight division!"
