AEW Deadly Draw Tag Tournament Night 1 Result, Recap and Review

Night one opens up with commentators Tony Schiavone and Veda Scott, she is given short time to introduce herself to the audience whilst Tony brings up her history as an Independent wrestler. They then hand the proceedings off to female wrestling legend Medusa, who goes over the rules and concept of the tournament once more. There will be 16 women competing in 8 teams, each team is chosen at random via the luck of the draw by pulling a coloured chip out of hat.

Match 1

The Nightmare Sisters (Brandi Rhodes and Allie) Vs Penelope Ford and Mel

We go back to early in the evening to see each of the competitors pick their chip, first its both Allie and Brandi Rhodes with Dasha. Brandi picks first and she gets a red chip as she talks it over with Dasha Gonzalez, we see Allie clearly cheating by looking into to the hat and picking out the second red Chip.

Next Up Penelope Ford and Kip Sabian are back stage with Dasha, Penelope Ford picks out the light blue chip, the other of which had been picked earlier by Mel, they seem happy with the partnership.

  • The Nightmare Sisters pick up the win, after Allie is able to distract Mel and rake her eyes, allowing Brandi to hit the spear and get the pin fall.

This was kind of a mixed bag, in particular with the Nightmare Sisters, because I was actually impressed with Allie who was easily the MVP of this match. Where as Brandi was bad, really bad she was easily the LVP (Least Valuable Player). Penleope Ford and Mel were okay, but in wrestling you can only be as good as the person you’re working with, at times when getting heat on Allie they looked good, but when faced with Brandi their performance dropped.

Match 2

Nyla Rose With Vicky Guerrero and Ariane Andrew Vs Tay Conti and Anna Jay.

We get a recap of Wednesday’s Dynamite promo from Nyla Rose and Vick Guerrero, as they talk to Dasha Gonzalez, stating they don’t care who her partner is. Nyla would go on to pick her chip out of the hat revealing the colour purple, Dasha lets them know that someone had already picked the other purple chip. As they enquire as to who, out steps the former WWE Diva ‘Cameron’, now going as Ariane Andrew, who lets them know “She is back”.

We go to earlier on in the evening, where Anna Jay accompanied by the Dark Order’s exalted one Brodie Lee, she picks her chip from the hat and as she reveals it to be a black Chip, former NXT performer Tay Conti walks out with other black chip.

  • Tay Conti and Anna Jay picked up the win, after Anna Jay makes a blind tag, allowing her to hit a Natural Selection on Ariane whilst she was focussed on Tay Conti. After the match Nyla lays Arriane out with Clothesline.

I am torn here, as it was a good match, Tay Conti showed WWE exactly what they missed out on by not allowing her to shine in NXT, on the other hand they buried Nyla once again. As stated, Tay Conti was incredible showing off her legitimate martial arts background as she let out a flurry of kicks on Nyla taking her down. Anna Jay showed some impressive ring work as she and Tay worked over Nyla’s leg, she worked really well in the team with Tay Conti. It was horrible to watch Nyla get worked over by Conti and Jay, although she was not the one to be pinned she still came off looking weaker than she should’ve. Ariane was the complete opposite of Tay Conti in this match showing exactly why the WWE were right to release her, she should’ve been to one to take the majority of offence from Anna Jay and Tay Conti.

2 and Half Stars

This should’ve been 3 and half stars as Tay and Anna were great but this was the wrong match lay out and another instance of bad booking by AEW.

Promos

2 Stars then treated to Promos from the two winning teams as they are interviewed by Alex Marvez, first up were Allie and Brandi, Brandi spews a horrible bragging promo that would've been better suited for Brit Baker, so expect yet another change in character for Brandi Rhodes. They wsere followed by Tay Conti and Anna Jay who managed to deliver their message quickly and simply, Tay tells Marvez that they are the prettiest and the deadliest, Anna Jay refuses to comment on the Dark Order, just their victory and tournament.

Final Thoughts

I am some what conflicted here, I was massively impressed with Tay Conti who looked fantastic along side an equally impressive outing from Anna Jay, it was a shame it was at the expense of Nyla Rose. Allie looked good in the ring but unfortunately she was let down by how bad her partner was, who would go on to deliver an equally bad promo just to cap off an all round bad performance from the ‘Chief Brand officer’ Brandi Rhodes. So for all the hard work Tay Conti, Anna Jay and Allie did it was all dragged down by the poor performances of others and the incredibly bad booking. One little side note, it was awesome to see Eddie and Vicky Guerrero’s daughter Shaul as the ring announcer of the tournament.

2 Stars
